[ARMA2] ACE2 Install & Update guide
« on: January 01, 2010, 16:56:03 »
I found that there was a fair bit of conflicting info on how to get ACE2 so I thought I'd get us all on the same page here, and help those who haven't figured out how to get it.

From: http://dev-heaven.net/wiki/ace-mod2/Lazy

This is basically the easiest way to stay up-to-date with ACE2. Unless you want to sync other mods, use this method.

  • Download and install the Six Updater Suite (14.5 MB)
  • Launch the "Six Updater - Console" (Shortcut in Startmenu) at least once, it will complain about missing config file, remember the path it notes, then close the window. Normally this is a subfolder of the user's Application Data (AppData) folder. If there's a problem however, it will revert back to the Program Files location.
  • optional Download our latest Milestone release (".7zipped modfolders") from A.C.E. Biki. Save the files (Do not extract them) in the Six-Updater application-data folder (I found that the updater needed to grab the whole lot again anyway as the latest release is still too out of date)
  • Download this config file and save it in your Six-Updater application-data folder (Windows 7: C:\Users\johndoe\AppData\Roaming\Six-Updater)
  • Launch "Six Updater - Console" (Shortcut in Startmenu). Allow plenty of time to complete, as it has to download a lot of data (unpacked size is 1.7Gb)
  • Inside your ArmA2 install folder you will see a new shortcut called "Play ArmA2 with @CBA;@ACE;@ACEX;@ACEX_SM;@ACEX_PLA". Copy/move this to your desktop and run it whenever you wish to launch with the ACE2 mods.

The good thing about using the updater is that we can all remain on the latest version simply by running the Six Updater program before we start.

    Happy hunting!

Just a warning, not all servers run ace, and if you join one without it and have it running you will probably crash the server. Proceed with caution.

Of course. Keep a shortcut to your vanilla Arma2 on your desktop.

I found a rather handy little program that I found very helpful to update ACE and some other mods that are popular.

Its called Yoma Tools

http://dev-heaven.net/projects/list_files/yoma-addonsync2009

I personally found the Six Updater a bit of a pain as I could not gauge upfront how much need to be updated.

Yoma gave me a graphical interface so I have an idea what exactly it going to replace.

You can also launch ARMA from the program with the correct mods enabled.

Though I only really use Yoma for its update capability.

It does have a very nice server browser so you can see what mods are being used instantly.

And you can also filter by country which is always handy for us.

To launch ARMA I use ARMAII launcher

Neat little program that allow you to setup multiple profiles.

Also has the ability to prioritise your mods in sequence.

Enjoy

Hmm, I just tried the yoma sync program and I suspect that it doesn't play well with UAC in win7/vista as when I asked it to update ACE, it tried to run another version of itself and crashed.

I must be the only person on the planet who hasn't turned UAC off. I like how all my settings go into a known place so that it's easy to back up. It's unfortunate how even modern commercial software seems to have issues with it though.

Yes it was the first thing I did. Turning it off.

Still not sure if its something you might want to report as a bug.

As officially Yoma is still in beta.

I have not had an issue with it personally under Win7
